Moving from mass
Carrara White Marble
Created by automatic drawing, this technique was developed by the surrealists, as a means of expressing the subconscious. In automatic drawing, the hand is allowed to move 'randomly'. In applying chance and accident to mark making, drawing is to a large extent freed of rational control.
The drawing was only made on one side of a sawn block, other sides/ views where often guesses and chance as to the final 3D appearance of the sculpture.
This piece took hundreds of hours and held a good deal of risk of breakage in the making.
