Cake, Mandale Slate & hopton Wood Stone

King of the Seas

Purbeck Limestone

When I first started off stone carving, I worked with some crude tools and no particular place to work, often suffering assorted English weather conditions in the process.

This and many other heads where created during the first few years of teaching myself to carve. It is not my first carving as these would have been relief based works or much smaller chunks.

Most of the heads like this one were carved from very rough rockery stones, the type and shape indicating the finished result. Often the stone would be heavily vented (cracked). Cutting out such flaws gave direction and form - or sometimes a frustrating collection of smaller stones.
